This is a waste of time and money.

How are deaf people, and those hard-of-hearing supposed to be warned?
Especially in a REAL emergency, when there won't be a warning published
beforehand! Not to mention those living on Portishead Down, in which region
the "sirens" have never yet been heard, even by those with good hearing?

These modern so-called "sirens" are a sick joke. Why can't proper ones be
used, as were used in WW2? Those COULD be heard everywhere, and it didn't
need multiples of them to cover a few square miles. And there was nothing
"hi-tech" about then to cost a fortune or to go wrong!

fire alarm at work? There are ways and means!

Do you think a Deaf or hoh person can hear the WW2 type sirens?

This is a waste of time and money.
How are deaf people, and those hard-of-hearing supposed to be warned?
Simple. People who _can_ hear rush round to the deaf person's house and
stab them repeatedly with pins, spelling out in Braille "Don't be
alarmed, this is only a test".

Really?? Usually Deaf people will have someone at work who is in charge of
informing them if there is a fire alarm or the company may well have fire
alarm flashing lights, they can also have a personal alarm which will
vibrate. Within the house the doorbell is set up to flash the lights all
over the house.

The present "sirens" are so weak that even the "good-of-hearing" have never
heard them on top of Portishead Down - there isn't a "siren" up there - the
only one(s?) is/are down below in the town - a mile horizontally and 300
feet vertically, and these modern devices can't carry that far!.

And not everyone knows what neighbours are hard-of-hearing, so no-one is
going to go knocking on doors, and those living on their own will just not
be catered for by this system of "warnings".

During the war, people were far more neighbourly, and were much more aware
of their neighbours. Now, so many are much more elderly and live on their
own that this system is a complete farce - it just not has been thought
through how it is to be of use to a large portion of the population..

Fave.

I think you'll find that the Deaf or hoh person themself will ensure that
there are neighbours who are aware that they have hearing difficulties.

Why bother?

Ch IV - Natural Selection "Survival of the Fittest"

It's cruel, but true.

Not true! You mistake the meaning of the word "fittest". The correct
interpretation as used by Darwin is the ability to reproduce a species. That
is the meaning of "fit" - able to make, as in the Latin fecit - "he made
it".

It is nothing to do with "suitability", the modern usage of the word

Largely prompted, IIRC, by the phosphorus fire at A&W a few years back,
when instead of the usual prevailing winds carrying the fumes over the
poor people of Avonmouth, the ubermensch of Portishead got a few
lungfuls. It's unlikely to happen again anyway as the area where the
store once stood is being decontaminated in readiness for another bunch
of wealthy immigrants to whine about how they don't have enough parking
spaces, how their allocated turning space has been reduced from the
original specification, how the marina fees are more than Bristol docks,
etc etc.

Switch the sirens off. Let the fcukers choke.

Just because a small new development in a town is devoted to high-earners
etc, doesn't mean that the rest is like that! And gutter language doesn't
help your case either.
